Treatments
Identifying the potential allergy triggers is key to prevent symptoms. In the case of particularly respiratory allergies, this may not be completely possible, and relief or preventive medication may be needed.
The most frequent therapies used in immune & allergy conditions are:
- Antihistamines: Older antihistamines tended to be quite sedating which limited the value of their use, particularly for hay fever or dust mite allergy. Second and third generation antihistamines can usually be taken safely in doses that are very effective for long periods of time. Some of the potent second and third antihistamines require prescription. Antihistamines can be given in different routes such as oral, spray or drop; the route would depend on different factors like clinical history, benefits.
- Steroid-based medications: They can be very effective at reducing symptoms such as inflammation. Steroids used as nasal sprays, inhalers or topically as creams, are generally safe as long as they are used appropriately and under medical advice.. Expertise is required to ensure that the maximal benefit can be gained from these types of medications but without risk of any side effects.
- Calcineurin-inhibitor medications (e.g Tacrolimus, Pimecrolimus): These are more recently developed medications. particularly used in eczema. Topical steroids can be also useful in eczema; however, in certain skin areas such as the face, there is an increased risk of skin atrophy with prolonged potent steroids and calcineurin-inhibitor may be indicated.
- Leukotriene receptor antagonist (e.g Montelukast): It can be used in the treatment of chronic asthma and sometimes in rhinitis.
- Adrenaline auto injectors: They are prescribed to people with allergies who are at risk of having a severe allergic reaction (anaphylaxis).
- Herbal medicine: Plants have therapeutic properties and they have long been used in Medicine. Herbal medicine can be used in prevention and treatment of some immuno-allergy conditions.
- Monoclonal antibodies(*): Applied to chronic urticaria. (*) We provide this treatment in Madrid (Spain). If you are located in another area/country, we will advise you where you may be able to receive it.
- Desensitization or immunotherapy (*): Also called ´vaccines´. to pollen, dust, pets, insect stings. There are two main forms: sublingual (drop in the mouth, usually only first dose given under supervision) or subcutaneous (injections given usually in the arm under observation). One of the successes in allergy as it has the potential to actually cure allergies by diverting the immune system’s response to a specific allergen. It can also prevent the appearance of asthma when given for nasal/rhinitis symptoms. (*) We provide this treatment in Madrid (Spain). If you are located in another area/country, we will advise you where you may be able to receive it.
- Bacterial immunotherapy or Autovaccines (*): The immune system has an innate ability to recognize molecular patterns that occur in the most common microorganisms, including bacteria. For this, the cells of innate immunity have sensors that detect their presence and are activated. Bacterial immunotherapy exploits this fact to enhance the immune response in a nonspecific way, and is the basis of what is known as heterologous immunity. This immunity allows immunization with certain bacteria to acquire resistance against others, and even against unrelated pathogens, e.g. virus. (*) We provide this treatment in Madrid (Spain). If you are located in another area/country, we will advise you where you may be able to receive it.
- Probiotics, prebiotics, nutraceutics: Probiotics are living microorganisms which when administered in adequate amounts confer a health benefit on the host. Prebiotics are specialized plant fibers; they act like fertilizers that stimulate the growth of healthy bacteria in the gut. Nutraceutics are food or dietary supplements that provide health benefits in addition to its basic nutritional value. We personalize a management plan for you based on your clinical history, based on the objective of this therapy and gut barrier function/ microbiome results.

Diagnostics
We are at the forefront of the latest validated diagnosis techniques in our field with expertise in:
Microbiota / Gut barrier function : With a stool test we investigate inflammation, malabsorption, infection, maldigestion, dysbiosis and/or metabolite imbalance
Molecular testing (microarrays) : With a single test, we investigate over 100 allergic components and predict the likehood of severe reactions
Genetic testing for food intolerance: including coeliac disease, lactose intolerance, fructose intolerance, DAO deficit
